Dickies Work Gloves: Update
October 11th, 2008 by Guitar TedHey all! I thought I would chime in with my experiences with the Dickies Work Gloves that I got waaaay back in the spring of the year.
I have worn these for almost the entire summer with some time split between these and some very similar gloves, (more on that in a bit) that I got in June. The Dickies have held up really well. I was afraid that the hot weather would render these unwearable, but the reality was that they worked all right during the hot, humid Iowa summer.
Check out this photo. It shows what happens when you sweat a lot and the leather gets soaked by perspiration. I have washed these several times in the machine washer, drip dry, and they look like new once you do that. However; if you don’t wash them often, they get wrinkled and kind of gross, even worse than I show here. That might be a bit of a downer, but really, you should wash your gloves often. Especially if you sweat a lot, as I do.
In this photo, you might notice a smal tear near the wrist band on the glove. This is the only real damage that has been noticed beyond normal wear and tear. Not bad, especially when you consider that I used these gloves for trail work which entailed moving some rock and limbs from trees, which can really tear a glove up. Also notice here that the Velcro attachment is on the inside of the wrist. This is my only real problem with the Dickies Work Gloves.
The Velcro “hooks” easily snag most modern jersey materials and start runs in them. This happened to two new jerseys I got this year before I figured out what was going on. This angered me to the point that I searched out another pair of work gloves that had the Velcro attachment on the outside of the wrist. This solved my problems, but I have returned to using the Dickies, since they are more comfortable, and I am aware of what they can do. I just am very careful now. So far, it has worked out.
So, for $16.00 I can say that these gloves easily earned their keep and have kept working well despite being treated roughly at times. Would I buy them again? Probably, but more for cooler weather. I think my old standby, the Mechanix branded gloves will be my “go-to” warm weather mit from now on. Just the way it used to be!

Just picked up some Fox Dirtpaw’s on sale at the local ATV/Cycle/JEtski emporium for about the same (16.95, 5 off regular). I did a bit of test riding with them on Saturday and they seem great so far. I used to use em years ago and I’m curious to see how this pair holds up especially with regular machine washings. My 661 that I rarely/never washed basically started falling apart and stinking too horribly after a year and 4 months and I binned them after getting these.
Those look like good candidates for trailwork/backup gloves however. I’ve used my trailwork gloves as subs a few times.
Now if only I could leave helmets in my trunk without worrying about heat damage.
I use Mechanix Wear gloves to ride. They’re durable and you can get them anywhere for under $15. If you spend a little bit more you can get the higher end ones made to use with impact tools - they supposedly have vibration dampening in them. Whether that’s true or not I don’t know, but I really like them.
I also use MW gloves for batting gloves in softball…..
