Regression - Wool

January 24th, 2008 by Arleigh Jenkins

As seasons progress it seems that more companies are hopping on the wool wagon. It is tried and true. Been proven with the best and still keeps on kicking. Almost any good bike shop you can find wool socks and maybe even a wool jersey or two. When doing a quick search I found these options for wool. Readily available for your consumerism.

Why am I such a big fan of wool?
It’s natural. It doesn’t hold your stink. You stay dry and warm much longer than any other synthetic material I’ve found. It’s classy. It last.

Some of the best clothes I have picked up lately have been wool pants and sweaters from Goodwill. Walk out for under $5 with a nice pair of pants that will block out most wet and cold days. You also don’t feel as bad if you crash out and put a large hole in those $5 pants.

Did someone say wool? Ibex, Woolistic, Rivendell, Smartwool if you’re bucks up or Goodwill like rliegh sez if you are on a more modest budget. It’s the best, the people I ride with think I’m insane, but they do not know. Ask Grant Peterson abou woll, he’ll talk yer freakin’ ear off ;-)

    Err, Arleigh, sorry.

I love wool for all occasions. Wool socks are a gold standard but I have some wool army gear that’s so warm I don’t get to wear it nearly enough!

Yeah wool rocks. Cheap semi used wool rocks harder. If you’re handy with a sewing machine, buy two wool sweater shirts (that’s what I call ‘em, but I don’t know if it’s correct, the weave is more like a shirt or jersey, not open like a knit sweater). Cut one up and turn it into pockets for the back (or front to be really retro) of the other. For a ten spot or less, you have a functional woolie cycling jersey. Compare that to 10 times as much for off the shelf wool cycling jerseys.

I wear Smartwool socks year round. Thick ones in the winter, the real thin ones in the summer. I can’t stand cotton socks anymore.

Ordinarily I bow my head in shame for being a Florida Mountain Biker, but during the winter when you turkeys start talking about wool and stuff I can stand tall and proud and thumb my nose at all of you frost-bitten mountaineers.
Gotta love these 70 degree winters in Florida!!

I wear my wool Cinzano jersey in the summer. Mama, mama, the Italians are coming!

Wool (especially merino wool) isn’t just for winter anymore. I wear an Ibex jersey on my ride to work all year. The same jersey that keeps me warm when I am sweaty from overdressing in the winter also wicks sweat and aids cooling on 98-degree rides home. And all this versatility with no stink.

    Kerbouchaud,

Don’t you need a mountain to be a mountain biker? Are there mountains in Florida? Oh yeah, the Matterhorn ride in Orlando. How is that single track?

    Cheers from Oregon
