I've been using a Surly stainless steel chain ring since July. After a lot of heavy use on my single speed, it shows no noticeable wear. The bolt holes aren't recessed, so it'll be easy to flip around when the time comes. It was a great investment, and a great replacement for the aluminum ring that was on there. That one was shot!

Great tips. There are several things that I hadn't thought of as I'm contemplating converting my triple to a 1x9

One other thing that I found handy was not only to flip the teeth but also with a geared (mid or outter) chainring. They have built-in offsets and you can flip those rings to be more in-board or out-board to better tune your chainline.
