How Was Your Ride Today?
December 5th, 2007 by Arleigh JenkinsAs the hours are getting darker and in most parts of the US the temperatures are getting lower how have you been managing getting your wheels on the dirt? Night ride, early ride, or playing hookie?

Tonight I plan on getting out for a night ride after work. There is a weekly Wednesday night ride at one of the local trails. The trail is only 6 miles long but that works out great for loops in the dark.

Ride? I wish.
First, been sick . . . sick as a dog lately. Second, we’ve got a tonne of snow up here - too deep to ride the trails. Outdoor exercise for me is snowshoeing, skate skiing and xc skiing. Whoot! Good fun in the snow.
Cheers.
My ride? Sunny and 74 degrees. The trail was perfect, tires stuck like glue around the twisted tacky singletrack still damp from the weekend rains. Miles and miles of desert trail and not a soul on them but me. Man I love winter riding in Phoenix.
My apologies to all you winter riders who are stuck inside. Come to Phoenix. The desert will take good care of you.
I rode to the shops and picked up a selection of Christmas Ales
I’ve been getting out more lately but this week is gonna take a hit with snow today probably wiping out my riding chances tommorow. In fact I may stay out near work to avoid commute hell home. Plus my lake winter boots should be in next week and I’m looking forward to not loosing all feeling in my toes on rides.
Night rides are awesome, I love the focus and seperation. I let myself hang back and for nice parts of the ride it’s like I’m alone out there.
My ride yesterday was pretty okay. Just a quick night ride down the road, then down the rail-trail, then down the road again, to a local bar. Drank a few beers, read some Elmore Leonard, then headed back home. Note to self: get a hat with earflaps.
Unrelatedly, I love the glasses in that photo.
I went night riding. At 8 am. It was -30C. Still fun.
We still don’t have much snow here in Anchorage. It really sucks, so we are still riding studs on the icy, rutty trails and street paths. Down to 10 to 15 degrees F for my morning ride. I had to wait for a Moose to wander off my trail route on my commute. Waited for 10 minutes, due to my lack of desire to bushwack through some brush to go around.
2 hours today on a new to me trail in Ct. temp 27 degrees. Plenty warm on the uphills
Since I get random weekdays off, I usually get to hit the trails whilst everyone else is at work. Rode the Marin Headlands last week, Mission Peak today. Not too chilly either.
Hi Guys!
It’s kinda chilly to ride out here in Nevada. Temp is ranging around 58 - 68 in broad daylight. It could have been manageable, but the problem is if you travel about 56 miles, you need to hit the road earlier where temp is still about 36 - 45 so you’ll be home before sundown . Perhaps some of you are still comfortable at this temps but me as an Asian, not anymore.
I’m kinda obsessed to keep my odometer reading increases at a regular interval but unfortunately with this upcoming freezing months, we might as well look for other alternatives to sweat out e.g. stationary bicycling (inside a gym) or some tread mill session.
Bye for now…
By the way, to date, i’m at 2,096 mi mark already. Maybe it’s not impressive for a year and 6 mos mileage. anyway, what’s important is, with my age now (44) I’m certain I could still pedal my bike for the next 10 yrs or so.
Thou you don’t recognize me yet but I’m one of them you meet on the road…..
Last nights ride was killer. The snow was coming down hard in DC. I took a mix of trails and roads. This morning it was all iced over at 25 F, which made things a little more tricky but no less fun. Sugoi makes some killer shoe covers!
Here is Central Texas our problem is the spring rains, winter is actually nice since the temps are reasonable and you can go on longer rides and not worry about water issues.
Ride? Winter time is big wave surf season in Santa Cruz!
Weather has held it’s usual clear and sunny here in San Diego. Only 50 degrees at the start of this mornings ride…….. but rain is on the way. Here in Low SoCall, the mud/clay is ugly after rains, so we wait until they “firm up” a bit.
Hit up Nassahegan (in CT) for our regular destination for a night ride. Temps in the teens, trails had a nice grippy layer of crusty icy snow (found a few icy rocks here and there) but it was all good!
Packed the ole gps as well:

Took a couple of pics as well, too bad only 2 were sort of worth posting:

Florida riding is beat right now. We only have about an hour of daylight after work lets out so trail riding during the week just aint happening. Half of the Treasure coast trails are under water, and the other half of them are sand pits. Go figure. I’ve been supplementing my trail time with 20 mile urban assult night rides. I miss the dirt
An hour of daylight after work? It’s dark when I leave work at 5-5:30. Depressing.
