Instructables - Build a Repair Stand

December 3rd, 2007 by Arleigh Jenkins

Another great how to at Instructables. Every bike owner needs a good repair stand and maybe a Park stand isn’t in your budget.

What you’ll need:
- (2) 1/2″ by 18″ length galvanized nipple (threaded about an inch on each end) - $2.73 each
- (3) 1/2″ by 10″ length galvanized nipple (same thread - about an inch) - $1.90 each
- (1) 1/2″ by 60″ length galvanized pipe (again, threaded) - $6.98
- (1) 1/2″ galvanized tee fitting - $1.09
- (3) 1/2″ galvanized 90 degree elbow - $0.91 each
- (2) 1/2″ galvanized cap - $0.89 each
- (1) spring clamp - $3.42
- (2) hose clamps (these may vary in size depending on the size of the clamp handle - the ones I bought were for hose sizes 3/4″ - 1 1/2″) - $ 1.19 each
- (1) flat-head screwdriver (why do we even still use this kind of screwdriver?!) - Don’t know the price..had one at home.

Total cost: $29.54 (if you don’t have to buy a screwdriver for the hose clamps)

Read all about it at Instructables. (The photo is also from the same site.)

That’s about as close to a Park stand as you can get when building your own!

How heavy of a bike can this hold?
I see the bike pictured, but my heaviest bike is in the low 30s

Gonna have to build one like that

1/2″ pipe would hold your 30 pound bike, but your ability to really apply any leverage while repairing your bike will be limited because the 1/2″ pipe might bounce a little.

To avoid this bouncing problem, I suggest using 3/4″ pipe. It may be slightly more expensive, but you will much when you strap down your heavier bike.

My cheapie repair stand is actually the bike rack that I put on the back of my car. I’ve bolted a piece of angle iron to the wall in my garage with a couple of washers between the steel and the wall to act as a stand-off. then I just hang the straps on the steel just like I would on my car and viola’ instant bike rack.

I bought the parts for this 15 minutes ago, and decided to go up one notch to 3/4″. I know this was written a while back, (so there will be some price inflation) but just so you know, as of September 2008, the parts to make this, (from Lowe’s) was about $60.

However, I bought 2 different clamps (a 2″ and a 3″), and I bought two types of hose clamps, to see what worked better. I also bought black pipe, which is cheaper than galvanized pipe.

Holy Crap! I hope it works good! I will be putting this together tonight.
