Colby,

There are multiple reasons your chain can break. Cross chaining, Starting in the wrong gear. Hitting a long and it splitting the links. The pin in the chain wasn't installed right in the factory. To many factors to think of with out seeing the chain.

Did the shop you buy it from help with the chain? It normally is covered under warranty for the first 30 days unless it is obviously rider error.

Here are a couple how to's on front derailleurs

Alignment - http://bluecollarmtb.com/2007/11/19/front-derailleur-alignment/
Limit screws - http://bluecollarmtb.com/2007/11/06/adjusting-your-limits/

Goodluck and thanks for the questions!

I have had a few problems with my trek 5.5. The first ride the chain broke. I am still somewhat of a newbe, so what could cause this? My first thought was the derailer. I made some adjustments and it hasn't happen again. Is there anything else I could check? I am still tring to tweek my front derailer so it does not rub the chain. What is the proper way to do this, which screw does what?
