The 1×1 Swap Out : The Rear End

October 22nd, 2007 by Arleigh Jenkins

A few more minor details were hammered out this morning. Finally found some spare Torx bolts to install my rear rotor!!

The key thing about installing a rotor is tightening down the bolts correctly. Slowly snug down all the bolts equally so they are barely touching the rotor. Tighten down the bolts in a star like pattern, never tightening the one directly next to the one you just worked on. Doing this will keep the rotor from bending or causing it to warp.

Aligning the rear wheel in horizontal drops is pretty easy once you get the technique down. Pull the right side of the wheel back that is attached to the chain to get correct chain tension. Then pull the left side of the wheel to make the wheel sit straight in the frame. Double check both the tension and if it is sitting straight in the frame after tightening the wheel down.

There are a lot of opinions on what type of rear wheel to use with the single speed application. Freewheel, free hub, single speed, geared, bolt on or quick release. Personally, I’m not a big person so I can get away with riding a standard wheel with a spacer kit. It opens up options for using the wheel later. Saying that I am currently running a Paul hub with freewheel and quick release on the 1×1 project. This is mainly due to the fact I had it, and Paul makes a great hub. Using a Surly Tugnut to keep my wheel from sliding has worked this far. I did get a build up of grime along the gnarled end caps which caused the wheel to slip. A little bit of degreaser and sand paper later the wheel holds like a true champ.

I still haven’t tracked down the right chain ring spacers and I don’t have any single speed chain ring bolts let so I’m going to run it with a large chain ring in place. My first real ride will hopefully be in the mountains. I’ll give a write up later in the week of how it responds, and probably another write up on the Habit shorts I’m trying out.
