And why does a 12 year old have his own plasma? Start him off with something basic, and when he's old enough to get a job; have him work for whatever he wants. It'll teach him that what you want in this world is not always handed to you and will lead him to develop patience, humility and appreciation for the things received. It's the 07 model so it's a closeout special at the LBS, but for a bit over Arleight's price range you get Deore front derailleur, X7 9 speed rear derailleur, Avid disc brakes, Shimano hubs, SPDs, etc all on a made-in-USA frame. The big negative for my son is the 80mm Headshok -- it looks "weird" which is the all important factor for middle school boys. He has is eyes on the Ibis Mojo SL, which is about a $4000 bike built up. He's even talked about selling plasma to save up for that bike.
