Best Bike Under $800?

Again I was searching the MTBR forums late at night with a cold beer in my hand.  I stumbled across a post asking a good bike under $800.  The author actually labeled it as the “Best Bike Under $800″ which is hard to say because the best bike is different for each rider.

My winner for a great mountain bike under $800 -

2008 Gary Fisher Piranha
SRAM drivetrain, Shimano hydraulic brakes, Rock Shox Tora fork, and a good wheelset.  It is available in two different colors, bright green and matte white.

    My son (age 12) is shopping for a new bike. He has is eyes on the Ibis Mojo SL, which is about a $4000 bike built up. He’s even talked about selling plasma to save up for that bike. Let’s see if I can convince him this Fisher is just as good ;-)

    It comes in two different colors so it seems to appeal to almost anyone.

    Saw this at a LBS a few weeks ago. Very nice bike and even rode it around a bit.

    I have a personal preference towards the Mullet, not the best components, but I just love the styling of it.

    My son test rode a bike today that was on sale for a bit *over* $800 - the Cannondale F4. It’s the 07 model so it’s a closeout special at the LBS, but for a bit over Arleight’s price range you get Deore front derailleur, X7 9 speed rear derailleur, Avid disc brakes, Shimano hubs, SPDs, etc all on a made-in-USA frame. The big negative for my son is the 80mm Headshok — it looks “weird” which is the all important factor for middle school boys.

    a lot of people at mtbr seem to like the hardrock pro… its nothing special but it seems every other review says that “upgraded my hardrock pro”

    Fritz your kid is being spoiled if he can even consider a $4000 bike. And why does a 12 year old have his own plasma? Start him off with something basic, and when he’s old enough to get a job; have him work for whatever he wants. It’ll teach him that what you want in this world is not always handed to you and will lead him to develop patience, humility and appreciation for the things received.
