Duct Tape : Tires & Flesh
September 12th, 2007 by Arleigh JenkinsMy final post about duct tape for awhile. Maybe this winter I will find more uses & photograph them. I know at least 10 more ways to fix things via duct tape but haven’t had the chance since I started this series. Send us your photos, I’ll collect them and put together another round.
Tire Booting. How many times have you cut your tire and needed to boot it with a dollar bill, business card or a GU packet? Not anymore!! Apply some duct tape. As shown I used two pieces going in different directions for more thread strength. If you want to make it a more permanent fix pull out your glue from your patch kit and go through the steps of patching but use the duct tape instead. I’ve used this several times for a long term fix. The seal was strong enough that on my old Mosquito (Hutchinson) tires which I ran tubeless I was able to seat the tire, spin the tire a few times to get the Stans moving around & popped it back up with a CO2 cartridge. I wouldn’t use this for long term, but it held me for a month until I replaced the tire.

Applied: (If I was trying to boot a tubeless tire I would be a bit more careful with air pockets but this was simply for demonstration.)

First Aid. As a mechanic you come across small wounds from time to time on your fingers. Band aids tend to get dirt under them and peel off as you work, but duct tape sticks!! I recommend to apply a band aid under or small piece of tissue so the tape doesn’t stick to the wound.

No Opinion on Duct Tape for tires, but I can say that it works great for injuries and it’s waterproof too. I jammed the nose of a surfboard through the bottom of my foot while surfing about 10 years ago. It left a hole you could stick your thumb in and broke 2 bones. Ordinarlily one would head to the hospital but not on a day in florida with double overhead glass. Half a roll of duct tape and part of a t-shirt kept me going for the rest of the day.
“It left a hole you could stick your thumb in and broke 2 bones.” — excuse me, I’m feeling a bit woozy about now…
Ha Yeah, remind me to tell you about the shark someday……. Just kidding, no sharks. That’s why I’m sticking with the MTB scene, it’s just about the same amount of fun level and a hell of a lot safer.
