$2 Truing Stand

September 9th, 2007 by Brad Quartuccio

It is perfectly reasonable to true wheels while still in the bike. Plenty of folks do it just fine, using the brake pads or a carefully placed thumb as their guide.

Myself, for some reason, have always had trouble with such methods. I need the relatively clear sight lines of the truing arm and the audible signal of it touching an out of true rim to make it all work.

A spring clip and pencil are a simple solution. Clamp it to the fork or rear stay and it provides a clear view of the rim passing by the pencil-point along with an audible sound and mark on the rim. And its adjustable to whatever degree you so choose. The clamps aren’t more than $2 each, and I’d guess you have a pencil around…

Good thinking! I never even thought about using those two items. I usually just go with the brake pad method, but I’ll have to try this next time!

That’s a great idea. A zip tie attached to the seat stay for fork leg and then cut to length works pretty well too, especially if you need to make adjustments in the middle of nowhere.

I’m sure you could probably find some way to use duct/duck tape also. LOL
