Trying to Prepare
September 3rd, 2007 by Arleigh JenkinsThe ‘07 season is almost over. Most people have moved on to look at the cyclocross season or if you are like me you are looking at the 2008 mtb season. Do I want to do cross country or endurance? A little bit of both? I’ve started to send my race resume to sponsors (anyone want to sponsor me??!?!) The new season is a clean slate. After this past season of disaster (I had mono for a very long time), I look forward to the long miles and many trails of dirt I will see.
If you are interested in racing, or have race in the past here’s some tips to get yourself started.
1. Set goals. Mountain bike racing should be fun, so don’t stress yourself out setting too many goals. A good goal for starting to consistently train is to set how many days per week you want to ride.
2. Don’t train too hard too fast. It’s only September. Between late October and January you should be getting in your fun longer rides. As the winter season goes by extend your long rides.
3. It’s not about the bike. Too many people think they need the lightest, stiffest ride. What you have will most likely do you fine. Yes it is true that if you are more comfortable on your bike the stronger you are, but you don’t have to buy a new bike to start racing.
4. Use the winter to try your hand in various aspects of the sport. Locally in NC we have cyclocross, winter short track races & chilly road races. Try something different, and keep yourself excited to ride
5. Night ride! Winter is the time to invest in some lights and go riding after the sun goes down. It helps your skills & is very fun.
6. Have fun.

Just wondering how effective road riding is for preparing for off road riding.
I havent’ had time to do a lot of offroad riding lately, and the last time that I went I was in a pretty bad way. Would putting in some street miles help?
