Another DIY Bike Rack
August 10th, 2007 by Tim GrahlAwhile back we posted a How To on making your bike rack for your truck.
Reader Dave Jr. does us one better:
In regards to the “blue collar bike rack”, I did something similar, but CHEAPER!
I did use an old hub as you demonstrated. However, instead of a block of wood and hose clamp, I just used two ‘U’ bolts around the hub. Grand total= $2.00.

Looks good to me.

I actually made a rack out of a skate board truck. Just pound out the axle and replace it with a hollow one (for a skewer). I did some filing and tightened down the elastomer until there was no movement sideways. Then I mounted it upside down and whoalla!
I just saw a fairly blue collar rack today at a race. It was just a small wooden grid (made of 2×4s) sitting upright next to the cab of the pickup.
A lot like the racks they have at downhill mtb lodges - all you had to do was stick the front tire in one of the slots and the bike sat upright. It’s quite nice if you don’t want to remove a wheel.
Nice… Good job. I should mention though.. .the original actually only cost about 50 cents (assuming you purchased the bolts). We actually grabbed everything out of spare parts bins.
I noticed no one ever came up with a blue collar option for the guy that didn’t want to take his wheel off (becuase of disc brakes). Tell Tim I’ll be thinking about it.
