Bearing Grease

August 8th, 2007 by Brad Quartuccio

A tub of grease is your friend, and will last the home mechanic for years. Many would like you to think that you need fancy bicycle specific grease for some reason or another. Other than in specific instances, like shock innards, freehub pawls, composite parts etc. just use some marine grade waterproof bearing grease.

Available for about $5 in every hardware store around. Save some money on grease, and then save money on worn out parts by using lots of it where called for.

Another specific instance will be winter biking on snow and ice in below 30 degree digits. Using a heavy grease such as that will cause quite a bit of resistance in your headset, especially when you get to the single digits. It will be resistance you can actually feel.

That marine grease is great. Even cheaper and easier to find is standard white lithium grease. It works fine, especially for greasing seatposts, bolts, etc.

I’ll admit though, I still love Phil Wood grease :)
