Hey! I recently had this trouble. A cracking (!) noise coming from the left side of my handlebar, or so it seemed, whenever I was climbing. Since I ride a SS, it was the only noise save for my tires humming on the ground, and it drove me nuts. I took the bar and stem off, greased all mating metal surfaces, including the bolts, with some white lithium grease, presto, problem solved. applied it only lightly on the steerer-stem and stem-bar interfaces. I worry, however, about over- or under- torquing the (steel) stem to the (aluminum) bar since I don't have a torque wrench (yet). Advice? Did I do anything wrong?
