Bar/Stem Grease

August 2nd, 2007 by Brad Quartuccio

Sometimes one can notice a clicking creak that isn’t coming from the cranks. Maybe when you stand up and really grab those bars? It could be coming from your bar/stem connection, and could be very simple to solve.

Firstly, if you suspect your bar is creaking you should give it an inspection for cracks. Check near the stem first, and then under the brake levers and shifters. No real worry about it cracking under the grips, but you should try to move the brakes and shifters aside a bit to give a look - a burr on the clamp of either could start a crack. Assuming all is clear, simply apply a thin layer of grease on the stem clamp and tighten it down to spec.

Many times thats all it takes, a dab of grease on the stem and the creak is gone.

Hey! I recently had this trouble. A cracking (!) noise coming from the left side of my handlebar, or so it seemed, whenever I was climbing. Since I ride a SS, it was the only noise save for my tires humming on the ground, and it drove me nuts. I took the bar and stem off, greased all mating metal surfaces, including the bolts, with some white lithium grease, presto, problem solved. applied it only lightly on the steerer-stem and stem-bar interfaces. I worry, however, about over- or under- torquing the (steel) stem to the (aluminum) bar since I don’t have a torque wrench (yet). Advice? Did I do anything wrong?
