Presta to Schrader Adapter

July 15th, 2007 by Brad Quartuccio

These things are really handy, and not enough people know about them.

This adapter screws onto a Presta valve, making it have the interface of a Schrader valve. This can be convenient, as there are plenty of pumps and compressors out there but only the bicycle specific ones can accept a Presta valve. Think old school foot-pumps and gas station compressors - maybe not ideal, but sometimes its all you’ve got. This adapter allows you to make use of all of just about any air pump out there.

And it should only be a buck or two at the local bike shop.

To use it, unscrew it from your closed Presta valve where it has been safely stored. Open the Presta valve, and replace the adapter. Pump up the air, pump it up yo. Then unscrew the adapter, close the Presta valve, and put the adapter back for safe keeping.

These little adaptors are useful. I keep one in the seatpack on each of my bikes.

I ride presta valve tubes, but I always have one of these as a valve cover on one of my tires just in case. I don’t think it adds too much weight, but I like to be prepared. I’m the one with the overstuffed hydration pack saying, “yeah, wait a second, I do have a butterfly band-aid… Oh did you need a zip tie, yea, I got that… Really old power bar/emergency ration, got that too…

I did this about a week ago before I read this article and I must say it works great. You MUST close the Presta as it says above, I didn’t and experienced a quick flat. Great idea!

I have the shittiest floor pump ever that won’t put much more than 60 psi , which ain’t enough for 700c x 23 tires. The gas station at the corner puts in about 90-100 psi when I use the presta adaptor.
