Water in the BB shell

July 10th, 2007 by Brad Quartuccio

A few weeks back, I posted on Ending that Crankarm Click. In Part 2 I mentioned a bit of water in the bb shell as a possible culprit.

But how’d it get in there?

The most likely source is through the seattube. Even with a proper fitting post, water can work its way into the seattube. Especially vulnerable are frames with rear facing clamp slots, as shown. As you ride, this gap is bombarded with moisture from the tire and can allow small amounts of water to get into the seattube, eventually causing that bottom bracket to creak.

It’s never been a deal breaker for me when purchasing a frame, but forward facing clamps are a nice touch.

I would imagine that a layer of grease on the seat tube might help prevent water from getting down to the bb.

RL: Not necessarily a safe bet. Grease gets watered down and washed away easier than you might think. Besides, that layer of “protection” is mighty, mighty thin!
