Off-the-shelf 9speed from Redline
June 4th, 2007 by Tim GrahlIn past discussions on this site the case for a 9 speed drivetrain has been made several times. Less maintenance than a 27 speed bike while not going full on singlespeed could be a very attractive thing to a lot of riders out there. I know, personally, my knees we’re starting to revolt against my daily commute on the fixed gear and then mtb rides on singlespeed 29er.
On this topic… Redline Bicycles is releasing their new Mono9. The stock drivetrain is a 32 tooth front chainring with a SRAM x-9 short cage rear derailler shifting from 12 through 32 tooth 9speed cogset.
Other specs…
Frame: Flight Double Butted Sanko Chromoly Tubing with fixed rear droputs.
Fork: Sanko Chromoly Taper Legs
Wheel set: WTB laser Disc Rims, Redline SB QR Hubs, Maxxis Ignitor 29 x 2.1 TiresPC 951 Chain.
Brake: Avid BB5 w 160mm Rotor.
Control: Ritchey Pro Bar, Stem, and Seat Post, WTB Rocket V SLT Saddle
Color: Warm Mineral Grey
Size: 15,17,19,21
And knowing Redline’s past offerings, this is sure to be an affordable choice.
So do you agree? Think there is a market for 9speed mountain bikes?

If it is within a couple hundred of their monocog then I’d buy it.
aren’t 1×9s awesome! i rode one all winter, with a bashguard and a chain minder they’re super reliable. i hope they go with sram shifting, seems a little more cable grime tolerant than shimano
Yah that sounds pretty sweet as a commuter setup or a light trail bike. I’d definetly consider that with a good price point.
I was looking at the Monocog Flight 29er but feared the full on change to SS… but this might be just the ticket to ease into the SS world.
i’m looking into buying the monocog 26er, but might wait until this comes out to compare. anyone know the relese date??
I got the Mono 29 last month as I was looking for a full-on MTB. How are 1×9 drive trains on chains? Isn’t the wild chain line something to be considered?
Course I’m rather persnickety about such things.
Spoke to Redline yesterday and they said the MSRP is $999.
i take that exact drivetrain + a truvativ box guide dirt jumping and it works terrifically… but 1000 is too much for a suspension-less, steel bike… u could set it up yourselffor much less, also, bb5’s can suck it. nothing less than bb7, i recommend hydros though
what we’re seeing are mult-speed bmx cruizers of the past re-interpreted for contemporary times. cooks brothers did it way back in the late seventies and early eighties. redline probably did it too.
my first cruiser was a 5 speed with a suntour deraillure, brooks leather suspension saddle, front leading axle chromoly fork and araya 26 inch aluminum wheels with suntour allow hubs. it was 1980 and it introduced me to primitive mountain biking. it was a natural step up from racing 20 inch wheeled bmx bikes in the mid to late seventies.
anyway, nine speed 29r’s are the second wind of a retro-grouch movement that started with the single speed mtn. bike.
multi speed 29r’s are a logical compromise between the elegant simplicity of the single speed and the versitile sophistication of a 27 speed full-suspension trail bike.
what’s old is new again. dig?
and yes! i think they will sell.
