How to visually differentiate RH from LH threads.
May 25th, 2007 by Brad QuartuccioYet another threading post. It may seem trite to the more experienced wrenches out there, but there is good reason to focus on the fundamentals before delving further. Having a solid hold on right and left-hand threading makes this all a bit easier.
To recap, I started this off earlier this month with some threading background with Righty tighty, lefty loosey - most of the time. Then a simple rule to determine what direction a given threaded bolt turns, the Finger Wrap Rule. Guitar Ted of Twenty Nine Inches fame alluded to this next one in the comments section…
You can visually differentiate right and left-hand threading very easily. Hold up the threaded end, with the threads pointing up as shown. If the threads slant up and to the right, you have right-hand threads. Up and to the left, left-hand threads.

It doesn’t get much simpler than that. Next time threading comes up, you can impress the hardware store guy with your solid understanding of an easy, yet easily confused concept.
