Proper Front Disc Cable/Hose Routing
May 23rd, 2007 by Brad QuartuccioRunning a front disc brake? Good on you, for you have more stopping power than even the best brakes of ten years ago.
But do you know how to route that front cable/hydraulic line properly? Somewhat counter intuitively, the line should go on the inside of the fork leg as shown. Absolutely not on the outside of the fork leg, even if the line seems easier to put there

This is done for two main reasons… In the event of a crash, and especially with hydraulic lines, you don’t want to risk the line being pinched, crimped or otherwise damaged. They’re pretty fragile and routing it on the inside of the fork leg prevents the hose from being caught between the fork and the ground. Its fairly well protected on the inside of the fork. The other reason is that you do not want the line snagged on brush or branches that your whizzing by on the trail. On the outside of the fork the line can make a nice loop to catch, throwing you from the bike and likely severing the cable/hose or otherwise making it a long walk home.
Fork manufacturers recommend routing the line to the inside, and so does Blue Collar. Get it right and prevent some hassles down the road.

Hey, thanks for the posting, it was worth the effort seeing how I just purchased a bike that was partially dissasembled and I really wanted to make sure the front brake cable was routed the best possible way.
