Finger-Wrap-Rule (FWR) for remembering pedal threading.

May 16th, 2007 by Brad Quartuccio

Here’s a simple rule of thumb to remember the direction of pedal threading, building on my earlier Righty tighty, lefty loosey - some of the time post. We’ll call it the finger-wrap-rule, and its applicable to any and all bolts assuming you know the direction of threading, but for now let’s just use it for pedals.

bcrh.jpg
Hold your right hand out like so. Notice which way your finger wrap around? Thats the direction a right hand threaded bolt tightens if you imagine your thumb as the bolt, and your hand as the head.

Next, imagine holding your right hand up to your right (driveside) pedal, your thumb being the axle and hand the pedal. See which way your fingers wrap? Thats the way to turn that pedal to tighten it.

Move to the left hand side of the bike (non-driveside) and repeat the procedure, but with your left hand. Thumb as axle, hand as pedal - your left pedal tightens the way your left fingers wrap.

Use your right hand on the right side of the bike and left hand on the left side of the bike, and never again forget which way your pedals thread.

    Or:

No matter which side of the bike you are facing, towards the rear wheel = tight and towards the front = loose.

A sage mechanic once showed me how to determine thread direction. Hold the threaded portion, (in this case, a pedal) so that the end that is going to be inserted is pointing up. Look to see which way the threads slope upwards. If the threads slope upards to the right, it’s right hand thread, upwards to the left, then it’s left hand thread.

This has served me well for over 15 years, but to each their own. As long as you find a system that works for you and you stick with it. :)

    It’s simple rule :) Thanks

    Nice Ted.

I’m too lazy to look up the bottom bracket cup directions. Is it the same as the pedal threads?

Reminds me of electrostatics in physics. Wrapping ones hand around a wire carrying a current to determine which direction the polarity of its resulting magnetic field rotates…I feel the same now as then *coughs* twentyfi.. years ago *cough*

    I need a beer

Heres a good one. No matter what side it is, spin the cranks backwards to tighten. No thinking involved.
