Chain Noise Tips

April 5th, 2007 by Tim Grahl

If you’re hearing some noise from your chain, here’s a few things to do…

  • Make sure it’s actually the chain. If the noise happens at the same place in each revolution of you pedal stroke, then it’s not your chain. It’s your crankset or pedals.
  • If you hear some squeaking or “chirping”, your chain needs some lubrication
  • If your chain is jumping between cogs while pedaling then your drivetrain needs a tune up.
  • If your chain is jumping on one cog or clicking, then you have a tight link somewhere. To find it, get off your bike, slowy spin your cranks backwards while watching the chain wind through your rear derailleur. The stiff link should become apparent. To fix this, grab the chain on both sides of the problem link and bend it laterally several times. Obviously don’t go to far as you can cause irreversible damage. Do it a bit, lubricate it then test it again.
