Press Release: Slingshot Introduces Fold-Tech Mountain Frame

March 21st, 2007 by Tim Grahl

Slingshot Fold-Tech MTB FrameGrand Rapids, March 20, 2007 Designed for the cycling enthusiast who can’t leave their bike at home – the Slingshot Fold-Tech MTB provides a travel friendly bike that can meet the high-performance needs of its user. “We realized the need for a full-size, high-performance mountain bike back in the 1990’s and our new Fold-Tech MTB provides another level of performance for our customers” said Aaron Joppe, Slingshot’s National Sales Manager. “The main criteria used in the development of the frame, was to design the ultimate off-road riding machine – while still allowing for it to be folded for travel” said Joppe.

At the heart of bike remains the famous SPT (Sling Power Technology) – an energy returning system which utilizes a composite flex board, stainless cable down tube and spring to provide the rider with un-matched performance and comfort. On the patented Fold-Tech MTB, a quick release “grenade pin” allows the cable to be removed – and prepares the bike for final folding. The frames pivot style collar sits over the seat tube – and upon removal of just one bolt – the collar (and attached front end of the bike) can swivel around itself into the compact folded position.

The front “Boomtube” or top tube; is a new, oversized custom designed 7005 aluminum tube which is engineered to optimize performance while remaining lightweight. The rear end is steel and features rack/fender mounts for the adventurous traveler.

Consumers can select from four standard Fold-Tech stock bike kits – or request a custom parts build kit which will better suit rider preference. “The Fold-Tech frame remains the same regardless of the parts kit used to build the bike” said Joppe. “Our complete bike price range is $1,150 for our novice build – to $4,100 for our high-performance pro build. This allows the user to advance as a rider – giving the flexibility to upgrade parts as needed, without having to replace the frame”.

The Slingshot Fold-Tech MTB frame is priced at $799, and come in 14”, 16”, 18”, and 20” sizes. The Fold-Tech currently comes in black as the standard color – but custom paint options will be available by summer 2007. A complete “System” – featuring a travel bag, cable splitters, CD-ROM and tools will also be available this summer.

Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Slingshot has been a leader in bicycle suspension systems since 1982. The patented SPT: Sling Power Technology, provides the rider with unparalleled energy storing performance. Slingshot is also a leader in high-performance folding bikes with its patented Fold-Tech line. For information on the Slingshot brand and their latest products visit www.slingshotbikes.com.

slingshots are so weird, anyone here actually have any first hand experience with them? i’m sort of amazed that the company is still around, i guess it means they must be doing something right, i just want to know what that something is.

Yes, weird. The cool part about their frame design, with the flex-board which acts as a suspension. With the Slingshot design is the drive train is not affected as the rear triangle remains static, unlike most suspension designs. This design allows for the frame to be set up as a singelspeed with suspension. I am sure that Slingshot has benefited from the recent upsurge in popularity of singlespeed biking.

I have a Slingshot tri bike and I like it. It’s obviously not super stiff when out of the saddle, but it rides really great. Maintenance is a breeze, and power through the crankset/chainstays is about right on. There is some power lost to flex, but not a whole lot by my measure. My time splits are about the same on my Slingshot as on my regular bike.
