Bike Storage: DIY Bicycle Hoist
February 6th, 2007 by Tim GrahlThis is a pretty simple and quick way to build a bike hoist that will lift a bike evenly and easily out of your way. The neat trick is that it uses one rope to lift the bike evenly from two points which helps it lift easily and uses pulley magic to reduce the weight of the bike for the hoister. No power tools required although a drill is handy.

As much as I like building things, there is a like product made that is already complete to install that is sold through REI for $29. Looking at the assembly or build photos for the self build; it appears to have a lot of hardware needed. That of which, would probably cost more to acquire idividually than to buy the “Pro stor (spelled correctly) monster hoist”.
You can get the same thing at REI for 29.00,which is probably cheaper than buying all that stuff you have there.
I bought a great pre-made lift at Lowe’s for $20, I think Performance Bike sells one also. I was going to build one like this but after adding up the cost of the individual pieces it was going to cost more.
This reminds me of a similar hoist I made using discarded plastic pullys and rope from old living room curtain hardware. After assembling and mounting everything to the garage ceiling, it hoisted up a bike just fine. The upside was that all my hardware was free and I knew I could easily procure more on-the-cheap at Goodwill or something. The downside: I was in the process of installing a second hoist when the first bike came crashing to the floor. Those little plastic pulleys are NOT the way to go.
