Zip ties for better traction

Here’s directions for better traction using zip ties from BikePortland.org:

Although it looks like this would help for better traction going straight, my guess would be this would make things more slippery laterally. Anybody actually tried this?

    No rim brakes allowed.

    Sideways won’t be much different because so little of the zip tie is “sideways.” Think about pushing the tire in the snow sideways, it’s mostly tire and very little zip tie.

    The zip tie helps for pulling traction because it sharp raised ridge into the snow. Like a tire chain on a car. It seems like it would work in packed snow. And maybe a bit on ice. But I won’t volunteer to test on ice!

    For braking the snow has to be soft enough for a zip tie or two to be in the snow.

    use the zipties inside out,,i do believe they have built in tread for just this purpose. :P

    I just did tried this out recently with a recent week of snow on my grocery-getter with a coaster hub.

    Works extremely well and isn’t too bad on bare pavement. If you’re like me and don’t want have an extra wheelset/bike to mount studs onto and don’t have the initiative to constantly change tyres, it’s a great option.

    oki: Zip Ties don’t work inside out. Try it.
