Stripped free hub body
December 11th, 2006 by Tim GrahlI finally got around to doing a thorough cleaning of the Carver after the mud that was the Punk Bike Enduro. When I got to taking a brush to the rear cassette cogs I noticed they were moving laterally… not a good sign. I pulled the wheel off and the lock ring had come off and I could pull the cogs off the hub. There was some gunk in there so I cleaned it out and I pulled out some thin shavings of metal.
The free hub body had stripped which caused the lock ring to come out and let the cogs move around. I asked Guitar Ted, our resident Crooked Cog mechanic, and he said this is pretty normal as the SRAM lock rings don’t seem to engage quite right with Shimano freehub bodies.
So this is something to be on the lookout for if you are running a SRAM drivetrain. I’ve had the cogs installed on the wheel about five months.
Anybody else run into something similar?

Similar but not exactly the same problem: I had to send a SRAM cassette back once because it wouldn’t fit. I was putting it on an Ringle SOS-ABAH hub. The cassette itself was a little too wide and the lock rubbed on the chainstay. Way out of spec I’d say. I was afraid to really torque the lock ring down for fear of stripping the threads on the hub.
