Thought you may find useful, the way I have installed my Hayes mechanical workalike brakes using Avid Full Metal Jackets per the pictures [below]. Apologies for the dirty bike.

May I advise that you cut the surplus end of the cable to as short as possible as I have seen longer cable getting caught in the disc rotor and worse, pulled into the caliper and seizing the brakes!
