Biking in Cold Weather
October 13th, 2006 by Tim GrahlFritz gives his tips on riding in cold weather…
- Don’t ride your good bike. MgCl, salt, sand, and grit will all do
damage to your bikes and components. Washing the stuff off is a
challenge when it’s this cold outside. - You’re probably overdressed. Personally, one fleece layer and shell works good for me down to the single digits Fahrenheit.
- If your feet tend to get cold, don’t put so many socks on that you cut off circulation to your feet. When there’s snow in the streets, I currently use wool socks and Goretex hiking boots on metal cage pedals with Power Grips. Plenty of people do fine with clipless and shoecovers.
- Remove some air out of your tires to increase the contact area with the road.

Thanks for the link love, Tim.
http://www.icebike.com/ also has lots of info on winter biking. I learned enough there to survive my first winter of bike commuting in Cleveland.
