He's caught up in a world that he can't quite handle, though he pretends to be a part of it and plays the part. He's a modern day Beverly Hillbilly, a hick from the sticks making it big in the city. So when his friends say, "Here, try this. It'll make you feel better. Trust us, there's nothing illegal in it!" well, he just tries it. The theory I like right now: Landis grew up trusting everybody.
