Some parents say Lawrence school officials overreacted to a tragedy.

A kindergartner was killed in January riding his scooter from home to class. Soon the school district had a new rule — students younger than third grade can’t ride bikes or scooters to school.

And it doesn’t matter how short the distance from home and which school they go to.
