Those welded on reflectors bothered me as one of the plastic parts was missing so I cut them off and filed down the weld before I painted it...

I used to work in a high end racing bike shop in the Quad Cities, corporate home of John Deere plus a couple JD factories. Seems like every JD employee bought these bikes. They were very common around there. By far, the single worst item on the JD bikes was the suicide brake levers on the black men's ten speed bike. There was a screw that held a small ball bearing in place that anchored the extra brake lever. The screw would rattle loose, the bearing would dislodge and voila, NO BRAKES on the extra levers. If the bike was ridden further, the screw & ball bearing would fall out completely. I replaced dozens of these brake levers with the tried & true Weinman or Dia Compe brand models. The rest of the parts were pretty much industry standard for low end bikes. One unique item was the welded on side reflectors. No other company did that for good reasons. I used to see them in perfect condition as many were owned by JD employees but who never rode them. They just sat in the garage or basement for decades. Or they were trashed because they were not well made and didn't hold up to any abuse.

I've seen many other bikes repainted and labeled as John Deere bikes. Just because is says John Deere on it, doesn't make it so.
