“Fast Freddy” Markham becomes one with the bike.

On the track, under the blazing sun, the 49-year-old world record holder squishes his 5-foot, 9-inch frame into the protective shell of his human-powered vehicle and peddles to the metal and rock blaring out of his headphones.

With his knuckles and cycling shoes scraping the carbon fiber and Kevlar cocoon surrounding him, he hunches his shoulders, moving his legs faster and faster until his speedometer rises above 30, over 40, and into the 50 mph range.
