Finding Any Kind of Shape: UPDATE

July 7th, 2006 by Mike

Thanks for all the encouraging comments left on my Finding any Kind of Shape post. I’ve put into practice some of the suggestions that were left like cutting out bread (not all but most) and decreasing my meat intake. I’ve dropped another 3 lbs since the post and I’m now down to 217 lbs (only 17 lbs left to hit my goal). I set a personal record this morning by running 6.5 miles. I’ve never been much of a runner and biking has always been more fun for me but I just don’t see the same results with mountain biking. But when I combine running and mountain biking I lose weight left and right. Thanks again for the suggestions, I’ll keep you updated.

I’m a cyclist, not a runner (not anymore anyway), and I’ve experienced the same thing - it takes an insane amount of cycling to notice serious weight loss, while running makes it fly off right away.
I’m sure there’s a scientific reason for this, but I’ve always put it down to the fact that the amount of extra pain caused by being overweight when you run makes your body DESPERATE to get rid of that weight for the next run! : )

Missed the original, but here’s my two items-
    1) Cut out all canned beverages. Soda, lipton tea, whatever, and canned beer. If you’re going for beer, drink draft or bottled. :)
    2) GO FURTHER whenever you get out for something cardio. I found it hard to “squeeze in” another ride, another run, etc, but I found it pretty easy to simply make each one an extra 10 minutes.

Between eliminating 2-4 canned drinks per day, and picking up an extra 30 minutes/week of cardio without having to add an extra workout, I’ve dropped 15 pounds & 3″ off my waist since last summer - it all came off in about 3 months, and has stayed off since then.

    Good luck.

looks like you are making some serious progress

I have never been good at this
    but
weight loss is won with the little battles
    not the big picture

each time you try to eat at midnight…
    stop yourself
each time you go for fried… select baked
do not eat the skin on chicken…
    again… avoid fried

go for fresh instead of processed

    fruit instead of candy

    and yes
the extra ten minutes sounds like a good plan

take the stairs instead of the elevator
    walk instead of the car

    and you will get there

    me
I a a victim of my immediate desires
I lose the small battles every time

I have accepted that I will never be a calendar model

although I would love to be below 220 for the Shenandoah Mountain 100
sure would make those climbs easier
