Off Topic: How to get those coals HOT!

June 19th, 2006 by Tim Grahl

My wife and I got a charcoal grill a few weeks back and it was the first time I had ever started a charcoal grill. I read the directions on the bag and it said to stack the charcoal in a pyramid and put some lighter fluid on it and light it. Then wait 15 mins and the coals will be hot.

That worked ok except the coals never got evenly started. All of the coals on the top of the pyramid never got completely started while the coals on the inside got white hot.

My dad told me about this metal cylinder you could buy to start your coal in and it would get everything started evenly. Well I figured there was cheaper way to do this so I went down to rummage through the basement and I spotted one of my old desktop PCs. I yanked the cover off, bent one side over and had my coal starting device!

Below is the pictures I took during the grilling. It worked perfectly and my coals were a lot more evenly started!

Try it out yourself… but of course, I take no responsibility for you huring yourself in the process.
