Officer accused of beating teen he thought stole son’s bike

May 25th, 2006 by Tim Grahl

Gotta love how these news stories don’t really give the whole story. Did the teen really steal the bike? Did he initiate the fight? Did he fight back? All that’s said is the cop won the fight… I’m curious if the teen started the whole thing in the first place.

WQAD.com:

An off-duty East St. Louis Police officer has been charged with attacking a teenager who allegedly stole his eight-year-old son’s bicycle.

Forty-one-year-old Allen Bonds has been charged with aggravated battery in the beating of 16-year-old Jermond Owens.

Good points. This does appear to be a rather vaguely written article. One thing I’ve notice about media reporting on police incidents is that they often just get crap totally wrong.

I used to be a cop myself and I can remember times when I made the papers as being involved in an arrest or pursuit when I was nowhere near the incident or I was even off duty.

This article, as you seem to allude to, sure puts the cop in a bad light. Like you, I wonder what “really” happened… Keep us informed, eh?

O.K. now while the story is a little vague I wonder how important it was to beat the kid into a coma for stealing an 8 year olds bike that cost what maybe 200 bucks at most. The leagle fees alone could run into the thousands, plus the settlement if found guilty. I mean really see an anger management counsler.

Well, this is East St. Louis. Very very very rough neighborhood.

    Pat,

I agree that it’s a very bad thing if things went down the way the article leads you to believe. There’s a lot of wiggle room left in their story as Tim’s questions point out. If the guy beat the hell out of the teen just because he could then I completely agree with you. However, as I eluded, my faith in media’s accurate reporting of such events is not that great.

    Cheers,

    Eric
