Deer avoids car, hits man on bicycle

May 23rd, 2006 by Tim Grahl

Washington Daily News:

Most people have either hit a deer or heard of someone who has hit a deer, but Carroll Jarvis, 72, of 1303 Teachs Point Road, Bath, said the deer hit him.

Friday morning Jarvis was riding his bicycle down Teachs Point Road, like he does every morning, when he spotted a deer running towards the road.

LaDonna Younger, who lives a few houses down from Jarvis, was driving up the road in her SUV.

“I thought for sure she was going to hit the deer,” said Jarvis.

But the sprinting deer dodged the oncoming car and ran right into the unsuspecting Jarvis on his bicycle.

It happened very fast, he said. The deer struck the bicycle from the back knocking him over. He said he felt the animal run over him, leaving him with a scraped knee and a bruised leg, before running off into the woods. His bike was also damaged in the collision.

    Oooowwww!

Riding in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado I’ve come close to colliding with little mule deer. Never actually hit one though, nor have I been hit.

As you said most people either hit a deer or heard of someone who has hit a deer. Now the story has reversed. We will listen people talking that they are been hit by a deer.
    Poor Jarvis!!

I’ve been riding around 6 am each morning on a path that is heavily wooded but still close to town, the deer there are for the most part used to humans. I did have one charge at me, or so I thought, he was trying to get back to his trail and to do so he had to run directly at me. Sometimes they stand so still that I don’t know they are there until I’m right on them, which scares the piss out of me.

Feeling sorry for Jarvis! What was his mistake in all this. Deer was smart enough that he saved the car and hit the car. He might have thought that this a good way of taking revenge.

I just finished an 18 mi hard ride near Meyers (sp?) Creek Va, and was doing a 2 mi cool down. I thought about taking my helmit off because the temp was over 90 degrees, but did not. Seconds later I thought I heard a deer running parallel to me in the woods. I glanced over and saw a blur of motion which suddently shot out of the woods and straight at me. Luckily I had time to veer away but only enough not to get T-boned!. The deer still collided with me and my bike quite hard, throwing me over the bars. Luckily I rolled. The only thing that hit hard was my elbow, which got a deep puncture wound, and my head, which was protected. It was one of those times when everything goes into slow motion and even as I was being tossed over the bike I could see the deer continue across the road and into the woods on the other side. Soon I flagged down a passing motorist, who started laughing heartily when I told him what happened - until he saw the blood spurting from my arm. Then he said “I think I need to take you somewhere!” He was very nice and even picked up my bike before he took me to my host’s property. His only comment was “wow, this is light!”. He would only give me his first name which is ‘Fricky’. The lesson learned: Never ride without a helmit, even if it is just around the block to try you your new whatevers!
