The guys at Transportation Alternatives ran their annual Bike Month NYC commuter race, in which a cab, biker, and pedestrian attempt to get from Brooklyn into Manhattan in the quickest possible time. This year’s race was from Grand Army Plaza in Park Slope to the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side, where the competitors work during the day.

I raced a city bus seven miles on suburban streets. The bus beat me, but just barely — it got to what would be my destination bus stop maybe 15 seconds ahead of me. The bus first passed me on Page Mill @ Foothill Expwy in Palo Alto. The destination bus stop is at Willow and Hamilton in Menlo Park, a distance of about seven miles.
