SF to see new bike lane markings on bike to work day

The Municipal Transportation Agency is patching potholes and marking popular city bike routes with symbols to indicate the roadways are to be shared by bicyclists and motorists in preparation for Bike to Work Day Thursday.

The special markings will be painted on Market Street, a major bike corridor in the city.

The markings help cyclists and motorists by alerting bike riders to the “door zone,” the area of a lane where they could be struck by a motorist opening a car door, Muni reported.

The city of San Francisco officially introduced the special lane markings in September 2005 and the new program is being studied around the world because it has been shown to improve how cyclists position themselves in roadway lanes and reduces sidewalk and wrong-way riding, according to the agency.
