Firefighter Travis Coates jumps on his mountain bike and races down the field. Mid-ride he leans to the left — near parallel to the ground — and scoops a Frisbee off the grass before quickly popping perpendicular and tossing the disc off again.

Coates, along with eight of his friends, are playing a game they say they helped invent: Bike Friz, or just Friz. The object is to ride around and throw the Frisbee to all your teammates without dropping it. Simple brilliance. An underground sport is born.

“We were kind of looking for something to kill some time,” Coates says during a break. “Do some riding. Some of the guys played ultimate Frisbee. It made sense.”
