‘Borrow’ some air - Automatic Bike Pump

March 28th, 2006 by Tim Grahl

When commuting around town it’s best to carry around as little gear as possible. So most of us usually end up with one of those tiny hand pumps that take about a half hour to fill a tire up with. Instead, why not steal some air from those evil SUVs people are driving around?

This walkthough teaches you show to make an “Automatic Bicyle Pump”. One end connects to your bike and the other connects to a car’s tire. Free air. Sweet.

Kinda cool in a Macgyverish sort of way. My mountain bikes take 60 lbs though I can get away with inflating to 30 lbs. I don’t think my road bike is ridable with less than 60 lbs in the tires.

Fritz, that’s a good point. Maybe you could use a truck tire? Or a tractor, if you’re in the woods :)

    very funny…
    very cool…

can we use a buck knife instead of a valve to get the air out?

I have considered removing the valve core from cars that pass me aggresssively in my neighborhood
it blows my mind that I pass them as they are searching for a parking space

    oh
    sorry
my angry rants should stay on my own blog

Instead of stealing, why not have a pump built into the seat post? always with you! i have one coming with my dahon folding bike…

look for a work truck - chevy 2500 or bigger, those tires should be over 50psi with the proper tires…

In many areas of this country - even high end where I live - million dollar homes, ad lots of people with guns. The concept is good but a person is taking a risk - without recourse - if you simply approach someone’s vehicle withour permission, you’re asking for trouble
