USA Cycling recently announced two major programs designed to maximize the number of start spots granted to American mountain bikers at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. First is the announcement that six of the seven 2006 National Mountain Bike Series events have been included on the UCI Calendar…

The second major announcement is that USA Cycling has earmarked more than $50,000 for the 2006 Elite Mountain Bike Performance Stipend program. The 2006 mountain bike season marks the beginning of a two-year Olympic qualification period in which countries accumulate points towards their ranking—the deciding factor in how many start spots a country receives at the 2008 Olympic Games.
