Tank Track Snow Bike

Cheney Family Enterprises of Utah unveiled a prototype snow bike at the recently concluded Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City. Unlike most ski-bikes, the SnoMoBike is for pedalling, not downhilling. “Hibernation is for squirrels,” says the company website.

Ski-bikes have been around for generations but most are for downhill skiing.

The SnoMoBike can be pedalled so it’s like a cross-country MTB.

Kinda cool, but it looks really slow. I’d think regular wide-tire snow bikes would work better.

Looks beautiful, but it’s got some problem areas. Think about how the rear wheel in the track is going to want to arc when steering. It’s going to make the track scrub, and would be unstable. Also look at the swingarm just behind and underneath the seat collar. Imagine what the twisting forces of pedalling will do there. It should have incorporated some sort of “chainstay” brace to eliminate that. Saddle height as pictured leads me to believe that these guys are more artists than cyclists.

Notice the missing section of chain? Is this just an artist’s rendering of the bike? I also think that front ski would be hard to control - unless you lean enough to let the edges catch, turning isn’t going to be very precise.
