Police Sting in Portland
January 26th, 2006 by MikeJonathan Maus over at BikePortland.org posts about a recent police sting envolving stop sign enforcement.
The Portland Police staged an unannounced stop sign enforcement action this morning in inner southeast Portland. Unlike previous “enforcement actions” that were highly publicized beforehand and with signage in the road, this morning’s operation was more covert and unexpected.
Check out the reaction to it on the Shift email list and a bit more, including a poll in the forums.

I feel their pain. This happened to me in Davis, California. I was used to doing a “track stand stop.” I would make sure my wheels stopped turning, but I realized it was futile to argue the point with the cops who were standing a half a block beyond the stop sign to pull people over. I also wasn’t against the policy of ticketing people who ran red lights, which isn’t to say I don’t do it on my bike yet today. The sting the Davis cops were running then was at an intersection that crossed a busy street. If they were running the sting on a quiet residential street–that would have been a cheap shot.
I didn’t mention when this happened. I think it was in about 1966.
I’m not sure what any of this has to do with mountain biking. In any case there weren’t any in 1966.
