2004 Cyclist Fatalities Report

The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released statistics of 2004 cyclist deaths and crashes. 725 cyclists died in traffic crashes, accounting for 2% of all traffic fatalities; another 41,000 were injured.

Cyclist fatalities occurred more frequently in urban areas (66%), at nonintersection locations (67%), between the hours of 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. (30%), and during the months of June, July, and August (36%). The average age of the victim was 38.7 years. 87% of the victims were male.
