Ice Riding in Virginia
December 12th, 2005 by Tim GrahlWent for a ride yesterday with Troy and Jimmy (Mike bailed on us). The trails were covered by a thick layer of ice which makes for interesting rides.
I can say the ole tires on the Gart Fisher Cobia do a lot better on ice then muddy snow. Which makes sense for any cross country tires. It was so funny to watch each other ride in these conditions though. We’d all be riding along just fine when randomly a bike would slip out from underneath one of us and we’d end up laying on the trail.
I took at least 5 or 6 good tumbles. We kept seeing which of us could go over, around, under things the best. Gotta say I was the only one to make it over the hardest long crossing on loop we took, but I also biffed on a good many easy ones to.
But Jimmy was the technical guru of the day. Two spots both me and Troy walked our bikes through, he rode with no problem. Both of them involved a chance at getting wet, which is why Troy and I walked our bikes. Falling into a stream in 20 degree weather isn’t my idea of a good time.
There’s also a part on trail that has two steep and tight switch backs right after each other. On both of them I took hard falls over the handlebars. One of them I got wedged in between a tree which kept me from sliding down the hill further but also left my shoulder bruised up and sore today.
So funny with how there’s a layer of ice over the snow so if you get off the trail at all and your tires break through… good luck getting out!
It was definitely a great ride though. You work twice as hard on the climbs the icy descents get the adrenaline pumping good enough to make it worth it. If you get ice storms in your part of the world, I recommend getting the bike out on the trails the day after. However, I take no responsibility for the broken body parts that will surely ensue. But it’ll be some of the funnest pain you’ll experience.

so you are in VA
I was starting to think you were in Richmond CA
well
I gave away those old bikes that I had mentioned to you some time back
the thought of me boxing them and mailing them was a obvious unachieveable task for me
it was easier to grab a few old school couriers who happen to be old friends
have each of them come over and roll away with a beater or two
okay a beater and a half
or two half beaters
nothing really rolled away
it all had to be carried
but
there were some nice parts
Prentice got an old trek and a cannodale bad boy
both with fenders
one with a rack
definitely some good parts for someone who works on their bike year round….
(you can see a picture of Prentice if you go through the images a few weeks back)
then there is Scotty who feels that the complete bike I gave him is too nice to beat up on the streets
I was concerned for his safety with some of the gear he pushed through the city
but
he has different plans for the bikes I gave to him
sorry to babble
guess I should babble on my own blog
later
