Maverick boss: bikes made in Taiwan are better than US-made bikes

November 22nd, 2005 by Tim Grahl

BikeBiz.com:

Paul Turner, the man who founded RockShox, popularising suspension for MTBs, has joined the forum of MTBreview.com to answer anonymous critics who wrote that Taiwan-built Maverick bikes were now inferior to boutique brands made in the USA. “The US is a great place to invent and develop things, but it is not a good place to get a bike made,” wrote Turner.

Its really unfortuante that this statement is true. Being a toolmaker and a former employee of SRAM’s Illinois based mfg plant that closed after barely 4 years in the US. A short lived “Dream” job for this biker.

We are no longer the manufacturing capital of the world. For decades, many owners have profited and not reinvested in technology , equipment and training. In the 60’s it was Hong Kong, then portugal, Taiwan and now China. you can’t blame them for wanting a better standard of living, but you can admonish our government for not imposing tarrifs to equalize the playing field.

I just took the time to read through the whole thread. WHEW!! Some folks are really stuck in their respective posistions, so much so, that they can not see the validity of anyone elses points, or even stay on topic! (I won’t get into the spelling errors!)

Let’s get something straight here, if you do not appreciate the fact that your bike is made somewhere other than the U.S.A, then be consistent! Take off all that running gear that’s made overseas, and good luck with your tires and tubes! How rediculus is it to say that you won’t ride a bike because it’s made in such-and-such country, and yet everything you use, wear, and eat comes from all over the planet? I just do not get it!

Props to Paul Turner for taking the time out of his busy day to take a stand on an on-line forum. Double props to the originator of that thread for his appology, and for taking time to say, “he gets it.” That was awesome! There are some other posters there that could learn a thing or two from that!
