Each year, search and rescue teams recover over 1,000 people from the Colorado backcountry. The Crested Butte area’s search and rescue coordinator reports a dramatic increase in missions involving mountain bike riders, specifically. Due to the nature of remote, mountainous terrain, search and rescue in Colorado is often very expensive. Missions can easily cost thousands of dollars, especially when expensive equipment such as helicopters are involved.
