Pedals From the Past

I just bought a new bike. Or, more accurately, I just bought an old, outdated bike that uses 20-year-old technology. Compared to my current ride, it weighs much more, uses parts that don’t shift anywhere near as smoothly, and only has 12 gears as opposed to my current 20. And that’s exactly the point.

There’s something appealing about taking a step back from the technological breakthroughs that have shaken sports over the past 20 years, and to rediscover classic, time-tested designs. This bike — a Colnago — does that for me.

    Riding old bikes sure gets you some bad vibes, though. When I ride my new bike, I get friendly waves while I’m on the road. When I ride my 20-year-old steel bike, I still wave but the response is almost always a disdainful sneer or embarrassed look away.
