Stranded riders get 40 free city bicycles

SANTA CRUZ — It was first come, first served Monday morning as free bicycles were handed out to bus riders stranded by the Metro strike.

All 40 bikes were gone by 10 a.m., less than an hour after the giveaway started at the Metro Center on Pacific Avenue. At least a dozen people left without bikes.

The bikes — turned in to the Police Department as lost or stolen and not reclaimed within 60 or 90 days — were given out under an emergency ordinance passed by city leaders last week to help people who have no way to get around other than the public bus.
